It was a TV programme in the style of 'Le Iene' that uncovered an unfortunate trafficking of newborn babies in a hospital in Kisumu County, north-western Kenya near Lake Victoria.
The investigation aired on Ntv caught two hospital doctors red-handed who were ready to sell a new-born baby to a presenter of the programme who proposed himself as a potential buyer, thanks to a tip received from witnesses who obviously wished to remain anonymous.
At the end of the operation, handcuffs were put on the two doctors, one of whom confessed, according to the Kenyans website, to having previously sold four new-born babies.
The system was quite simple: the doctors sought out destitute mothers in need of money, admitted them to the hospital for delivery, and convinced them that it was legally possible to sell their child to new parents who requested it. To back up their proposal, the doctors invited the buyers to meet the mother and reassure her. Prices ranged from 1 million shillings (about 8000 euro) for a boy to 800,000 shillings (about 6500 euro) for a girl.
When the mother was discharged from the hospital and the agreed sum was paid, the new 'owners' of the baby received it. Apart from the illegal operation, the fraudulence lay in the remuneration that was paid to the mothers, only 100 thousand shillings. The rest ended up in the pockets of the doctors. One of the alleged doctors involved, while confirming the sale of four newborns, denied having benefited from the payments, claiming that the money would be given in full to the mothers once the deal was completed, explaining that he and his colleagues were only offering a better life to the children. The mothers also complained that they had difficulty making ends meet and selling the children was an easier and faster way to raise money.
"It is not a question of money. I did not want to have any connection with the child. I wanted the child to have a better life somewhere else. You don't know what I went through,' one mother said during the broadcast. According to the Kenyans website, some mothers chose this option instead of abortion. "One wanted to dispose of the baby, but I advised her against it,' one of the indicted doctors allegedly admitted. 'I told her there was a friend who could take care of the baby.
