Bad weather Kenya, Red Cross launches emergency

Risk of flooding of the Galana and Tana rivers

10-11-2023 by redazione

The bad weather emergency in Kenya now also threatens to bring flooding to the coastal strip, swelling the Galana-Sabaki and Tana rivers. The alarm was raised by the Red Cross, which provided data on the disasters that have already occurred in recent days, after the so-called small rains raged even in regions defined as 'semi-arid' such as those in the north-east of the country (Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties).

The official death toll is 15, but dozens are missing, and in Mandera county, an entire town, Elwak, was submerged by water and mud with all its huts and houses.
There are currently 85,000 displaced families across the country, and the Red Cross itself has requested emergency intervention from the government. According to the World Meteorological Organisation, the weather phenomenon called El Niño will affect the equatorial belt, in different ways, until next April, and according to Kenyan experts, the rains could persist even until the end of December this year.

Meanwhile, more disruptions are feared, adding to the collapsed roads and bridges between Nairobi, Meru and Garissa and the mudslides that have trapped cars and trucks in Samburu.
Fortunately, in the tourist destinations facing the Indian Ocean, from Diani to Kilifi and Watamu, no major problems are reported, apart from the power outages.
As always, the Italians in Kenya portal will update you day by day on the situation.
