Elections 2022: Malindi International Airport back in speeches

Candidate Odinga wants residents to be compensated

16-11-2021 by Freddie del Curatolo

The international airport of Malindi, open to flights from abroad, is for the Italians who live on the north coast of Kenya or who have been frequenting it for years, now one of the endless stories, already turned into a permanent joke.
Years of works started and stopped, funds allocated and only partially used, promises made in front of entrepreneurs or even audiences of tour operators at various levels.
The fact is that by 2021 the famous lengthening and widening of the runway to allow Boeing and other medium-large aircraft to fly is still not in place.
The parking areas, the control tower and the space for manoeuvres have been adapted. The immigration office has been adapted and the baggage rollers have been installed and put into operation.
The status of international airport has been there for years and someone remembers when at the beginning of the nineties charters arrived from Bergamo, with a technical stopover in Luxor, Egypt.
Before each electoral session we are used to new declarations of intent (let's call them that) of national politicians. But this time there is an important awareness that in order to be able to finish the essential works of adaptation of the Malindsian airport and at the same time gain votes, it is necessary to be sure that all the local citizens who have already been evacuated from the area that will be subordinate to the extension of the runway, will be properly reimbursed, and so will those who will have to suffer the same inevitable situation in the future.
This time it was the turn of presidential candidate Raila Odinga, in his likely last attempt and for the first time not as opposition leader and challenger, but as a replacement for the current incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta, who by law cannot run for a third time.
Odinga, touring Malindi before continuing on to Lamu, met with a large group of local politicians, including his likely candidate for Governor of Kilifi County, Gideon Mung'aro, former mayor of Malindi's golden years, those of the early Millennium.
Mung'aro has always been pro-airport and has often brought forward the requests of Italian entrepreneurs in the tourism sector of Malindi and Watamu, first of all his friend Flavio Briatore.
Meanwhile Odinga, speaking to his people, has promised compensation to 300 residents of the Kwachocha area, close to the airport, in view of the likely resumption of works.
Electoral boutade? Necessary turn of events?
We'll certainly see in the coming weeks, especially when the candidacy of the dauphin Mung'aro will be effective, who just yesterday left the Jubilee party card of Kenyatta to return to the "mother house", the ODM of Odinga.
The boeing and the hopes of an entire sector that represents thousands of workers in tourist destinations, from the hotel owner to the waiter, from the safari agency to the fruit and vegetable stall, are there, in mid-air, waiting for the punch line, perhaps unexpected, of the joke. Hoping that the laugh will finally be one of joy and not the usual bitter grin.
