Farewell Giampiero, protagonist of the magical Malindi.

From Fermento to other places, his elegant contagious smile

07-12-2022 by Freddie del Curatolo

One of the broadest and most infectious smiles that ever passed through Kenya, a zest for life that has faded just a little in recent times with the realization that the years pass for everyone, even for a lion of the Navigli who rode and played life like a savannah track, involving friends and companions in eating, drinking, traveling and good things as he was.
This was for all, at least in Malindi, Giampiero Pojaghi who left us at 81 after a troubled period of health from which it was hoped he could recover once again to return to dispense his Milanese-style irony, the inclusiveness from chats and card games, his dazzling jokes and passion for "his" Inter, for which he had also created the Malindi Fan Club.
Let's go back 25 years ago, when he took over the Fermento and made it the true nighttime hangout for Italians on the coast, where there was always a reason to have a good time and pull the sunrise with the lightness and inclusiveness that have been lost today. His natural, never snobbish elegance and generosity cannot be forgotten. Images of memory pass by and I see him laughing while hugging Cristina, his hair in the wind and his smile unsheathed like a peace saber, then playing me on a vespa on a dirt road in the blazing sun with the perfect shirt, always out of the laundry And then so many seasons with hangouts, parties, clubs to open and launch (like the good old days of the Tangier, when he could still dance on the tables...) and anecdotes to no end.
The Italian Malindi of which Giampiero was one of the stars is fading its lights, but if we will eternally remember its wake, it is also thanks to characters like him.
To Cri and Niccolo a very big hug.
