'Questa notte parlami dell'Africa' (Tonight talk to me about Africa), the film produced by Corrado Azzollini for 'Draka Production', which was shot for the most part between Watamu and Malindi between February and March 2021, is finally coming out on the big screens in Italy.
The comedy-drama is based on the novel by biologist and writer Alessandra Soresina (set in Tanzania), who co-wrote the screenplay with Azzollini himself, a lover of Africa and a long-time Watamu visitor. The plot is captivating: Emma, a lawyer in the midst of a deep personal crisis after the loss of her mother, decides to leave Italy for Africa. Here she meets her old friend Fé, thanks to whom she comes into contact with an association of activists committed to safeguarding animals and local populations. Founder of the association is Dylan, a mysterious character for whom Emma will immediately feel a strong attraction. Nuri, a young African girl, daughter of a very strict Muslim family, spends all her free time reading, in secret from her parents. For Nuri, books are the only means of travelling and getting to know the world. The girl finally gets permission to work a few hours in the village school library and here she meets Emma and Finn, a young activist with a stormy past. In the marvellous and contradictory scenery of Kenya, where beauty is mixed with corruption and the poaching of elephants for the ivory market, Emma and Nuri's meeting will push them both to focus on their fears and desires. The two women, so distant in culture and yet so similar in their need for freedom, will face dangerous and intricate vicissitudes, until the crucial choice. "Tonight talk to me about Africa" is The meeting between two women that becomes an exchange between the two worlds they represent: Europe and the Afro-Muslim world. Friendship knows no difference of race, religion or culture; it grows where two souls are willing to reveal themselves, giving rise to an alchemy that has universal value, because as a line in the film goes, 'Memories are as important as dreams are'. The film will be in cinemas from 27 October next.
