Italians in Kenya looking for a second home

Small investments on the coast, our advices

18-11-2021 by Freddie del Curatolo

I elect Kenya as my second home.
For now, at least. Then, seeing how the situation in Italy is going, you never know I'll think about a permanent move.
The emergency never seems to end, who knows how many vaccine booster shots will still arrive and so on.
These are the thoughts, many of which are expressly stated to our portal and accompanied by requests for advice, many compatriots who are tired of waiting and at the same time do not feel like breaking the still unfair or poorly structured bylaws prohibiting tourism from Italy to Kenya.
So the most popular solution is to buy a plot of land in Kenya, trying to spend as little as possible and avoid cheating.
There are those who have already tried, with mixed results, and those who have succeeded, even operating online with notaries and accountants in Malindi, Watamu and Mombasa.
So, faced with a stalemate in the real estate market on the coast, which if it experiences sudden surges is only thanks to local buyers, especially from Nairobi, an unexpected business is taking place that has transformed many small landowners into dissectors of "plots" that are sold at very affordable prices. From 5 to 10 thousand euros for a quarter of an acre (about 1000sqm) in which you can then build a simple semi-detached house and also have a portion of garden.
For many it could also be an investment, a bet with some money saved with all the restaurants and vacations missed during the pandemic year and the months of lockdown.
The advice for everyone is obviously not to send advances or entire sums without certainty of official documents, entrusting land searches to special "land surveyors", inspectors or real estate agents. Buying by mail order is a risk everywhere, let alone in Africa.
Where? The most popular places seem to be Ganda, Kakuyuni and Jilore inland from Malindi, in the Galana valley, or Matsangoni in front of Mida Creek, just a few kilometers from Watamu.
But people are also looking towards Mambrui, on the new paved road leading to Marafa.
Some Italians have already arrived in recent weeks with letters of appointment with lawyers and sellers, to sign the purchase and establish domicile.
Perhaps for now in a Canadian tent, but ready to build a hut, with or without a heart, but above all with or without Hope.
