Italy and Kenya celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations

Initiatives and exhibitions in the name of the Broglio Space Centre

Kenya is currently celebrating 60 years of diplomatic relations with the first nations in the world to recognise its independence, starting in 1964.
If the first was Germany, the second Russia and the third neighbouring Ethiopia, Italy was among the first ten to establish a representation in the capital Nairobi and open its embassy, while Kenya did the same in Rome only ten years later, in 1974.
In the setting of the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, the government's first cabinet secretary and foreign minister, Musalia Mudavadi, opened the day in the presence of, among other heads of mission, the Italian ambassador, Roberto Natali, and his deputy, Lorenza Gambacorta.
In presenting the long journey of diplomatic relations that has led Kenya from having only six diplomatic offices in the world, to opening seventy, Mudavadi inaugurated a group exhibition, open to the public for three days, presenting the history of the Kenyan Foreign Ministry, Kenyans in the diaspora and relations with the countries with which it celebrates this date. Among the few nations to have their own pavilion is Italy, which has decided to exemplify its presence in Kenya and its collaboration with successive governments to date, with the San Marco project and the Luigi Broglio space centre in Ngomeni, near Malindi.
It did so by displaying an exhibition on the life of its founder, Professor Luigi Broglio, to whom the centre is dedicated. The exhibition, curated by Freddie del Curatolo, was accompanied by illustrative panels on the activities of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) in Kenya and its collaboration with the African country. Mudavadi lingered in the pavilion and watched a video of the last launch of a satellite from the base on the Indian Ocean, which took place in 1988, wishing that the centre, in the name of the collaboration between the two countries, could return to carry out other launches, as well as training aerospace engineers and African personnel.
