Kenya, a leopard inside a university campus

Students alerted, KWS trying to capture it

25-11-2021 by Freddie del Curatolo

A leopard has been roaming around a Kenyan university campus, not far from the capital Nairobi, for the past few days. It sounds like the plot of a movie that holds one's breath, but it's the reality that Kenya Wildlife Service is coming to terms with, after being called by Daystar University Athi River Campus Administrator Caroline Mwangi and alerting her emergency response team. More than one witness saw the animal and recognized it as a leopard specimen. The latest sightings report that the feline was reportedly hiding in the woods separating the university's large park from a large dam, not far from the school's central building.
Students staying on the university campus have been notified by the administration through an email.
"Try to avoid the trails during the evening and students staying are encouraged to move in groups and should avoid the "Hotspot" area where the leopard was seen."
Precautionary measures have also been issued in case one comes across the carnivorous animal, such as clapping hands, screaming and waving arms to look bigger.
For its part, the KWS overnight set a series of traps to capture the feline and eventually return it to a protected reserve. At the same time, it issued a statement for anyone spotting the leopard.
"We urge members of the public who spot the leopard to get in touch through our toll-free number 0800597000 for immediate action," it reads.
