Kenya's polyethylene ban will not be total.
Principal Secretary of the Environment Charles Sunkuli said yesterday.
One of the recruiters of plastic bags manufacturers and consumers against the definitive application of the decree signed by the government last February was welcomed by the Supreme Court.
The novelties concern black garbage bags that will be excluded from the total ban and therefore can continue to be used, after transport by the means of waste collection and disposal companies.
But the decree, as announced by Sunkuli, also excluded the bags used to package food, especially for bread, sweets and all types of wurstel and sausages.
The government's environmental authority (NEMA) reminded that Monday will be reviewed also the last resorts, but there is complete confidence that starting a new era for Kenya on Monday 28 August.
"Only bags of fabric, canvas, paper, and ecological materials can be used - confirmed the communications manager of Nema, Evans Nyabuto - or their bags. There will be no other alternatives."
According to the National Environment Management Authority website, fines for those who contravene the ban on polyethylene will be very salty: from 2 to 4 million shillings (about 20 to 40 thousand euros) or up to two years of imprisonment.
