Kenya's international schools, the most expensive in Africa

Solutions for the children of well-off Kenyans and foreigners

14-06-2024 by Freddie del Curatolo

Nairobi has the most expensive international schools in the whole of Africa.
This was revealed in a global report published by the International Schools Database, according to which Nairobi (where almost all the medium-high colleges are concentrated) slightly surpasses Johannesburg in South Africa and Casablanca in Morocco. In terms of tuition fees, Kenya stands out in the negative with an average of about $5,300 per year. This, while only ranking it 67th in a world ranking that sees New York in first place and China as the second most expensive country for education, makes for a rather questionable education-price ratio.
It is symptomatic, from this point of view, that the top three African countries with the highest school fees are also those that are developing, if not already developed (albeit with all the African contradictions). Kenya, South Africa and Morocco share, together with Ghana and Nigeria, the palms of exponential growth, but also that of double speed in essential services that privilege only the wealthier social classes.

Kenya's expensive schools often force families to seek solutions abroad to keep their children properly educated. While for English-speakers the best solutions are India, Australia and countries offering attractive scholarships such as Scandinavia or Canada, for many Kenyans they also look to South Africa outside Johannesburg. In the smaller towns, the costs are halved compared to Nairobi and even in Cape Town, where many parents direct their efforts, international schools start at a minimum of USD 2,000 and are in any case on a better level, costs being equal, with those not only in Kenya but also in neighbouring countries such as Uganda, where fees have risen dramatically in recent years. As far as Italian residents with children are concerned, the solution is still to evaluate all the extra expenses that would entail having their offspring study abroad (air tickets above all), which is why people often prefer the Italian solution, still considered, together with Spain, Portugal, Denmark and Bulgaria, among the least expensive in the world. Especially if you have accommodation or... grandparents!
