Malindi elections: first results say ODM

Raila and Kingi ahead: Mtengo future MP

06-03-2016 by redazione

In the evening, the first carousels of supporters of the CORD coalition, of which opposition leader Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement is the main party, were heard in Malindi. And it looks set to remain so in the run-up to the national elections, after the likely victory in the polls to elect an MP for the Malindi district. The seat left vacant by Dan Kazungu, who was elected in the ranks of the ODM but switched to the majority and was appointed minister by Kenyatta.
Kilifi County Governor Amason Kingi is certain to have his dauphin Mtengo reinforcing the party's ranks in Nairobi and at the same time strengthening his position in anticipation of the August 2017 national election round that could at this point confirm him at the helm of the county.
Malindi thus confirms itself as a politically difficult land for the ruling party. The coast is historically hostile to the Kikuyu ethnic group and despite the good governance and the many promises made about Malindi and its environs, ODM is set to consolidate itself as the master of Kilifi County.
