Another day of protests is planned for today across Kenya.
Activists and influencers from Kenya's so-called Generation Z have mobilised to confirm that they want President William Ruto to resign, and that they do not accept his attempted cabinet reshuffle, in which, moreover, four ministers from the previous cabinet have been reinstated, with three (Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki, Environment and Lands Ministers Sopyan Tuya and Alice Wahome) in the same seats and one, former Energy Minister Davis Chirchir, moved to Transport.
In addition, the First Secretary and acting Foreign Minister, Musalia Mudavadi, and the Vice-President, Rigathi Gachagua, remained in their posts.
For the youth, this is an ‘unacceptable’ move, which is why they have planned several protests for today, including blocking all roads leading to JKIA international airport in the capital Nairobi.
The president's response to the announcement of new street demonstrations was harsh: ‘Enough is enough,’ he said, explaining that the country must move forward and that he hoped he would not have to take strong decisions. In the meantime, the opposition is split in the face of Ruto's reaction and the demands of the youth. While leader Raila Odinga, who is the same age as Joe Biden, remains silent, his main allies, Kalonzo Musyoka and Matha Karua, side with Generation Z. ‘How can you call kids parading with a water bottle, a flag and a mobile phone in their hands anarchists and violent?’ Kalonzo wonders, while Karua asks the government to listen to Gen Z's grievances and not to seek frontal confrontation. One of Odinga's closest collaborators and his lawyer in the many post-election appeals, former Speaker of the House James Orengo, has distanced himself from his leader, while other party colleagues have said they are in favour of entering as ministers in a new ‘broad-based’ government.
At the same time, moreover, the Chamber of Deputies (National Assembly) will be meeting to decide whether to accept Ruto's decision to annul the 2025 budget law.
In order to approve it or confirm the annulment, at least two-thirds of the deputies will have to vote in the chamber, as the assembly president, Moses Wetangula, recalled, debunking reports that the deadline for the decision had already expired by law.
