No street protests in August in Kenya

Opposition opted for dialogue with government

07-08-2023 by redazione

Good news for Kenya, for its law and order, the safety of its people, and in the background for tourism as well: opposition leader Raila Odinga said there will be no new street protests in the country until at least next September.

Odinga said his coalition, "Azimio la Umoja One Kenya," will only instruct its supporters to take to the streets next month to protest against President William Ruto's government if the planned bi-partisan talks between the opposition and Kenya Kwanza do not result in tangible facts.

The issues that the two political factions have finally agreed to address together mainly concern the caravan and the introduction of new taxes that will spill over into the economic conditions of citizens.
Odinga, however, as local media report, also has personal battles to pursue that perhaps citizens are less interested in, such as shedding light on the legitimacy of the presidential election he lost in August 2022 and the formation of the new election commission in a fair manner, as well as more inclusiveness for his party in parliamentary activities.

Peacemaking and hopefully constructive meetings to bring the country back to calm and solve the real problems gripping Kenya's lower middle classes will begin on Thursday, August 10.
Violent street clashes between demonstrators and police in the opposition's only strongholds on Lake Victoria have left 11 people dead, and the police's repressive methods have been denounced by Amnesty International and the Kenyan medical and bar associations. In all, the aid organizations, calculate that 27 people have died since April during weekly demonstrations across the country, including 2 police officers and 2 youths who had nothing to do with the protests.
