Nairobi blocked for a day of protests

Not much violence and all quiet in the rest of Kenya

21-03-2023 by Freddie del Curatolo

Nairobi blocked for a day of protests, already announced by Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga. It was feared to be a day of widespread demonstrations in various parts of the country, but instead, apart from the stronghold Kisumu, Kenya's second city, Mombasa, as well as the other main cities, remained quiet and a few timid protests were staged only in the suburbs where hunger, anger and desperation easily lead to clashes with the symbols of power.

In the capital, despite the fact that the procession of Odinga and his 'Azimio La Umoja' (in Kiswahili 'Declaration of Unity') coalition had been announced as peaceful, the usual troublemakers following Odinga's convoy of cars started throwing stones at the police cars, which responded by firing tear gas, while in other areas of the city protests and incidents were limited and kept under control. During an attempt to approach the State House, the presidential palace, the group leaders in the Senate, Stewart Madzayo, and in the National Assembly, Opiyo Wandayi, were arrested by security forces and taken to the police station. Malindi MP-elect Amina Mnyazi was also detained.

Odinga's motorcade moved from the Serena Hotel, where the leader and his allies were scheduled to hold a press conference, to the working-class neighbourhoods of the capital to gather demonstrators. As they passed through Pumwani, Eastleigh, Kamukunji and along busy arteries such as Juja Road, the opposition procession proselytised but clashes continued, with further dispersal of protesters through tear gas. According to Makau Mutua, an aide of the opposition leader, a bullet hit the car in which the two were travelling. Odinga stopped several times to reiterate the legitimacy of the demonstration and that it will be repeated every Monday if the government does not clearly respond to the country's problems, primarily the cost of living and the autonomy of the electoral commission. Indeed, Odinga is still claiming the legitimacy of his supposed victory in last August's elections, in which his opponent William Ruto was elected. For his part, after this day of extraordinary protest, Ruto made no statement.
