Motorcycle accident in Diani leaves Italian businessman dead

Giovanni Quadrelli of Rimini has been in a coma for a week

09-04-2026 by Freddie del Curatolo

He was 63 years old, had a Kenyan wife, and had recently become a father. The life of Giovanni Quadrelli, a 63-year-old native of the province of Rimini, was cut short after a serious traffic accident in Diani, where he lived and ran his business in the tourism sector.
A life cut short while riding his great passion, his motorcycle. Not a boda-boda, but a high-powered sports motorcycle.
According to accounts from local witnesses, he collided with another vehicle, and in the particularly violent impact, another person—a Kenyan—also died, while another remains hospitalized in stable condition. Investigators say the exact circumstances of the accident have yet to be determined.
The fact remains that Quadrelli, initially taken to the hospital in the tourist town and then urgently transferred to the Aga Khan Hospital in Mombasa, fought for his life for a week before passing away on Easter Sunday.
The entrepreneur from Romagna, who had worked as an architect in Italy and been active in the construction and tourism sectors, had long ago chosen Kenya as his home and workplace, building a new life on the Indian Ocean coast.
In Diani, he owned the Aqua Resort, a newly designed accommodation facility that showcased the creative design of the Rimini-born architect; it was one of the new hospitality hubs within the local tourism scene and was highly regarded for its standards and services.
News of his passing spread rapidly in both Italy and Kenya, prompting expressions of grief among friends, acquaintances, and tourism industry professionals along the southern coast, where Quadrelli was a well-known figure.
In recent years, Diani Beach has attracted numerous foreign investors and professionals, becoming one of the main hubs for international tourism in Kenya. In this context, figures like Quadrelli served as a link between foreign entrepreneurship and local development.
