KENYA AND ENVIRONMENT
08-11-2023 by Leni Frau
Next Monday, 13 November, will be a national holiday in Kenya for the first time.
This was announced by the government, which has decided to proclaim a day dedicated to planting trees, in line with President Ruto's desire to grow 15 billion plants in the next eight years.
The Minister of Home Affairs and National Security, Kithure Kindiki, confirmed the holiday, revealing that the president will be personally involved during the day, which he says all Kenyans should participate in, to fight against the devastating effects of climate change (and the galloping deforestation that does not spare this country either, we add).
Environmental and forest and ecosystem protection associations will be in the front row, just as the call to celebrate this national day in the best possible way is aimed especially at schoolchildren, although the government has already announced that national examinations of primary and high schools will be held regularly. The planting exercises will in any case be extended to all 47 counties in Kenya, with governors and ministers personally involved. The designated national location where Ruto will set an example to its citizens, however, has not yet been chosen.
