The American company of multi-billionaire Elon Musk, which entered the Kenyan telecommunications and internet market just over a year ago, has decided to suspend new corporate and private subscriptions and put requests for satellite connections on stand-by, after verifying an overload in the network. The decision came after complaints from some users in and around the metropolitan area of the capital Nairobi. Some residents, who purchased a Starlink dish and already pay for a subscription, have not yet been able to use the telematics company's basic services. The company, according to Kenyans website reports, indicated that the cheap packages had run out and that only those with rates above Ksh130,000 per month were available, while until two months ago the package for residential homes in Kenya for unlimited high-speed and low latency internet data was Ksh6,500 per month and the cost of the connection kit was 45 thousand shillings. ‘Nairobi and surrounding areas are currently at the limit of their network capacity. This means that too many users are trying to access the Starlink service within Nairobi and there is not enough bandwidth to support additional residential or roaming customers at this time,’ the company's statement reads in part. Data from the Communications Authority (CA) of Kenya shows that Starlink has gained over 8,000 customers in Kenya by 30 June 2024, with a market share of 0.5 per cent.
