By now, there are many safari agencies, authorized airport transfer vehicles, and private individuals who no longer use the so-called Mombasa-Malindi "highway" to take tourists and residents to vacation resorts in Kilifi County, but lately also to reach Kenya's second largest city for business or leisure.
For some time now, since the construction of the ring road that directly connects the airport to the main national highway, the other "so-called" Mombasa-Nairobi, there is no longer any need to drive through Kenya's port city or thread through the exit traffic to the north coast. It is sufficient to head in the direction of Nairobi and after about 20 kilometers from the airport turn right at the town of Mazeras, and from there, along a paved road that passes through Kaloleni, "cut" to exit onto the Mombasa-Malindi just before Kilifi. This road saves at least half an hour compared to the traditional route and allows one to see a pleasant hilly landscape that gives the idea of the rural hinterland of the Kenyan coast.
But not only that, road widening work has recently begun between Mtwapa, just outside Mombasa, and Kilifi itself. There are detours, very uneasy pieces of dirt road and slowdowns. For those still unaccustomed to the alternative route, it is time to modify or ask to adjust to the new route, at least until the Mombasa-Malindi road works are completed (i.e., from what the transport authorities have announced, at the end of 2025...).
