Two months to Kenya elections, Raila is up

Freddie del Curatolo's take on the situation.

09-06-2022 by redazione

Exactly two months before Kenya's national and presidential elections, polling agency Infotrack reports Raila Odinga's overtaking of rival for leader of the next government William Ruto by 4 percentage points. 42 versus 38, with a good chunk of the electorate still undecided and 6 percent that would have gone to other candidates.

Candidates who, however, one by one over the past few days, have been eliminated or, rather, have not been cleared by the IEBC election commission.
IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, the same one from the last controversial round of elections rejected in the first instance by Raila Odinga himself against current President Uhuru Kenyatta who now instead supports his candidacy, has been careful and inflexible about nominations.

Almost all of the independent candidates, for example, have been disqualified: some for failure to submit a degree certificate (essential to stand), some for anomalies in signature collections, which must take place in 24 of the 47 counties and have at least 20 signers in each.
There is no shortage of controversy, but especially newsworthy is the exclusion of a very powerful man in Kenya, a former backer of both Odinga and Ruto.
