Two evenings to present the musical stories of Italians in Kenya, laugh and thrill at each other, and above all raise funds for inland students in Malindi and Watamu grappling with the most serious food emergency in Kenya in 50 years.
The outcome of Freddie and Sbringo's two shows in Malindi (Tuesday, Dec. 20, Olimpia Club) and Watamu (Wednesday, Dec. 21, Sunset Beach) were nothing short of extraordinary. More than 40 records sold, with books and donations rising to 650 euros, which translated into what we with Karibuni try to do, is 1300 safe meals for those attending schools in Langobaya and in need of sustenance.
On the other hand, there is to tell about the meeting, the ironic and passion-filled performance, the songs from the album "Once Upon a Time There Were Italians in Kenya," Freddie's monologues and Marco "Sbringo" Bigi's musical virtuosity. And above all, the pleasure of enjoyment and the sound laughter of the audience, more than a hundred enthusiastic on the two evenings in Malindi and Watamu.
From the funniest and most applauded songs, such as "International Airport" and "Tourists, Where Have You Gone?" to the more musically professional episodes, such as "In Africa You Come Back," and the monologues "It Wouldn't Be Malindi" and "Sick of Africa," where Sbringo's soundtracks created the right feeling to convey those moods that have made thousands of compatriots fall in love.
Perhaps in January we will be able to repeat two more such events, and the comments, the word of mouth of those who attended and enjoyed them are the best viaticum to continue with the record presentations and shows that return to tell, with the formula of theater-song, the Italians in Kenya.
