Very old rock art in a Lake Victoria island

The Mfangano graffiti dated 30k years back

10-03-2015 by redazione

Ancient works of art found on an island in Lake Victoria.
British archaeologist David Coulson has discovered an island in Mfangano, 25 square kilometers of fishermen's huts, corn plantations and volcanic cliffs off Kenya's immense freshwater basin.
On the walls of the rocks emerging from the island Coulson, one of the leading experts on African rock art, first found a series of concentric circles and other drawings burned by the sun, which, after careful study, were believed to be the work of artists who lived on the island at least 30000 thousand years ago.
It has been a hard work to find the works, Coulson has lived for days on the mountains of the island, climbing in areas not very hospitable.
The works of Mfangano are among the best preserved examples of inscriptions among those found in East Africa, which is still rich in rock art paintings. After the findings at Mfangano, research is now being extended to the other islands of Lake Victoria, some of which are almost totally uninhabited, if not by occasional fishermen, and host a few eco-lodges that are resistant to tourist routes.
