An exceptional weather event for the usually regular and quiet Malindi, from this point of view.
A ‘water bomb’, as they call them in Italy, was unleashed on the town and in just a few hours flooded streets, fields and public spaces, causing damage especially in the suburbs and to the poor people and unpaved streets of the town. There was also flooding in the ‘low’ shops in the town centre and on the seafront, with the porous ground no longer used to these fast and unnatural downpours, more from ‘big rains’ than from the end of the wet season.
Now the fear is that the Sabaki may break its banks, and more damage may be added if the weather does not recover.
‘Today in Malindi everything is closed, residents and workers are stranded, the streets totally flooded,’ writes a citizens' association on social - Shops and vendors are counting losses. The climate change is real. Last year the situation was not the same. If it rains again, houses will be flooded. We need a better drainage system'.
