SHORT RAINS

Kenya still in the grip of bad weather

Flooding and disruption on the coast too

18-11-2023 by redazione

Kenya has been in the grip of bad weather for days now. No dramas, were it not for the poor people who still live in conditions for which the worst is to find themselves without even a roof over their heads, because these are the small seasonal rains, but the impetuosity with which they follow seasons of great drought, brings the country and its communication routes to their knees.

The peculiarity is that this year, even the coast, which is usually less affected by constant weather phenomena and heavy rains, is affected daily by downpours and floods.

There are several emergency situations along the coastal road: in Mwtapa, on the Malindi-Mombasa road, one of the bridges on the road to Kilifi was completely submerged for hours by water, with traffic blocked and cars drifting. Same situation beyond Ukunda, on the road to Tanzania.

Maximum alert along the banks of the rivers Tana (where more than a thousand families have been displaced) and Galana, which also flooded on the road leading to Tsavo East.
In Malindi, several streets were flooded and shops filled with water, as well as in Mombasa and Nyali. In the coastal city, the Italian event planned in the beautiful setting of Fort Jesus was also cancelled last night due to bad weather.

In the evening the situation improved slightly, but the forecast does not bode any better in the coming days.
If Athens weeps, Sparta doesn't laugh: there is still flooding in northern Kenya, especially in the Lake Victoria region, and in the north west. More than 5000 families are displaced in Mandera County.
And after the floods, health institutions fear for epidemics brought by water and mud, especially cholera.
