The floods in Kenya, which according to meteorologists and the government are not yet over and which will be joined by the arrival of the tail end of the Tanzanian cyclone Hidaya, will not only bring destruction, deaths and displaced persons, but also hardship for Kenyan students and their parents.
Speaking on national television yesterday for an address to the nation, President William Ruto ordered the Ministry of Education not to reopen schools, which had already been closed since 29 April, the scheduled date for the resumption of classes, after the usual holiday period at the end of each term.
"More rain is expected and the weather situation could worsen," said Ruto, explaining that schools will not reopen on 6 May, as had been planned after the first postponement, and that for now there is no date for the resumption of classes.
Everyone is at home, hoping that the rains, which will continue throughout the month of May, will lessen their violence and not cause further damage, like those that have caused the provisional toll of 210 victims (about seventy, with 50 missing, in the tragedy of the flooding of a river in Mai Mahiu, near Naivasha alone) and 165,000 displaced persons.
