In this period of drama for mankind, Nature continues to give us reasons to hope in the beauty of this world that we have undoubtedly also half troubled.
A few days ago a specimen of southern white rhinoceros was born in the Meru National Park. It was the Minister of Tourism and Wildlife of Kenya Najib Balala who greeted the happy event, sharing the news on his Twitter profile.
The Minister put a picture of the little rhino cub with its mother. The new specimen is a male and has been renamed Makosi.
This new sign of hope for the survival of the extremely rare species comes a month after Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) announced the birth of another southern white rhino in Nairobi National Park.
The lucky rhino's mother had secluded herself and escaped the sight of the Park rangers for three days, to reappear with the cub that will have been alive for three days at most.
The southern white rhinoceros belongs to a subspecies of rhinoceros that has been considered at risk of extinction in conservation environments for years, but is gradually repopulating. The northern one, on the contrary, is almost totally extinct: in the world, by now, only two females of this specimen have remained and the last breeding male, called Sudan, has died on March 18th, 2018, in Ol Pejeta Conservancy, in the county of Laikipia, at the age of 45 years.
