Kenya abolishes plastic rubbish bags and bins

Only biodegradables and mandatory separate collection

Another green breakthrough is expected in Kenya, seven years after the Kenyatta government banned the use, production and importation of plastic bags throughout the country.
Yesterday, NEMA, the National Environment Authority, in a statement, announced the decision to ban the production, importation and use of plastic rubbish bags and bins.
"In order to ensure an ecologically sound management of the organic waste fraction, the Authority orders that within 90 days from the date of this notice, all organic waste generated by households, the private sector and public institutions, religious institutions, public and private functions and events, shall be strictly separated and placed exclusively in 100 per cent biodegradable rubbish bags," the statement read, as reported by the national media.
Reiterating that the use and distribution of non-biodegradable bags must cease immediately, Nema wrote that to ensure nationwide implementation of the directive, all county governments and private waste service providers licensed by the body have been obliged to provide their customers with 100 per cent biodegradable rubbish bags.
Nema also intends to enforce the 2022 law that obliges citizens to separate waste. According to the Sustainable Waste Management Act, Kenyans who fail to comply will be sentenced to pay a fine not exceeding Ksh 20,000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months, or both.
Recently, the Kenyan President, William Ruto, stated that the country intends to continue its green turn to become a totally 'green' country by 2030, and not only in terms of renewable energy production, for which it has already exceeded 90 per cent, but also in production, sustainable agriculture, urbanisation and transport.
