TSAVO FRIENDS
18-04-2017 by Giovanna Grampa
Blue skies, white clouds, stifling heat and not a drop of water.
For too long the drought does not loosen his fierce grip and Tsavo, for those of us who had been missing for about two months, now appears a giant animal in hibernation that is consuming the last of his energy slowly, very sparingly, waiting for the long-awaited rain, the only oral rehydration therapy can work wonders.
Only some green area dotted here and there along the path of the Galana river, shady and precious places for animals during the day will take refuge to avoid the hottest hours of the day.
Thermometer in hand, in certain areas there are nearly 50 degrees Celsius in the sun and only a few animals have the stamina to stay in open areas to graze do not know what.
Herbivores are the first to suffer: the elephants eat dry grass and bark often see the tree trunks to try to draw a substantial certainly not nourishment. Even dikdik, pretty dwarf antelopes, usually darting like arrows at the slightest noise, resigned in pairs are sitting in the shade of low and dry bushes, looking around with their sweet eyes.
The buffalo roam in various low-lying areas in search of grass and water sources which, fortunately, not absent due to various interventions Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. They arrive exhausted and quench their thirst, ever vigilant, because in the area's many lions of families waiting quietly in the shade of the few tall trees were well camouflaged or between bushes.
At the sight of the lions buffalo sniffing their presence, slightly squinting eyes as if to better focus the coveted prey which is almost always the weakest animal or younger but still among the most isolated.
And suddenly a defendant, unknown signal to us humans, taking on prey with an ancestral technique, transmitted by genes in their DNA easily hitting the target and ... voila dinner is ready for the whole herd.
The great families of elephants are definitely migrated to greener lands that offer better nourishment. The matriarchs can not endanger the survival of their families and the few remaining ones know how to reach the sources of water and food.
On a positive note: a few weeks in the Pipeline area has formed a small deep lake about 30/40 cm. extended enough: there live herds of elephant, buffalo, giraffes and other herbivores that, all together, have found a new Eden. The show is one of the most exciting, especially after traveling several kilometers in search of animals that they are, however well hidden.
The weather forecast promises rain after Easter? Hopefully they will be centered on the Tsavo and falling drops as tears of joy, abundance.
In a few days everything can change, returning the splendor of lush green and lush, the vanilla scent of flowers in the grass and watch the happiness of all herbivores that will be satiated at will.
Perhaps, in this case, carnivores will have to spend some more energy to get food, but no matter. Tsavo just waiting to wake up from his coma.
