After guitar workshops and internships in the Nairobi slums and at the conservatory, and two applauded evenings together with one of the most talented musicians on the Kenyan music scene, the young Italian jazz musician Matteo Di Leonardo is on the coast, at the initiative of the Italian Cultural Institute in Nairobi as part of the 'musical residencies' for two evenings in Watamu and Malindi.
The guitarist, at his third experience in Kenya, where he has also recorded an album together with trumpeter Juma Tutu, will perform this evening at Sunset Beach in Watamu (free entrance) from 7 pm accompanied by the Mijikenda Jazz Band from Katoi wa Tabaka, with whom he will repeat in Malindi, in the setting of the Bar Bar already known for its musical Tuesdays marked by commingling. Jazz is above all improvisation, and with the Kenyan band from the coast, one expects a surprising jam session in which the refined atmospheres that Di Leonardo knows how to draw with the six strings, meet tribal percussion and the Mijikenda Jazz Band's re-proposition of the giriama traditions in modern form.
