A flurry of the best of Nairobi's cultured music in Malindi in a more unique than rare evening that we hope will be the first of many more quality offerings in the tourist destination and also for the many residents and vacationers who habitually frequent it.
The new garden of La Malindina restaurant and boutique will host one of the best-known jazz musicians not only from Kenya but from all of East Africa on Friday evening, November 25, as part of its "Art & Cultural Night." He is Mackinlay Mutsembi, a trumpeter and saxophonist, but also a brilliant singer and entertainer, a leading player on the Nairobi scene, thanks to extensive international collaborations. Having for years participated in the prestigious Safaricom Jazz Festival, Mackinlay was the founder and soul of the Nairobi Horns Project, a flexible jazz band into which talented New York artists and session men have also converged over time. For years with his label "Mackinlay Music," the Nairobi musician has also been promoting young talent with whom he often performs, as well as having his own quartet with which he alternates swing and be-bop classics with jazzy covers of artists from the finest pop music to modern contaminations with new R&B and African sounds.
For the occasion of the cultural evenings in the new space of La Malindina (where drinks and cocktails can be consumed or dined during the performances) Mackinlay Mutsembi will offer a solo performance to be discovered.
