Rodari in Kiswahili: matinee at the Malindi Museum

Performance by primary school students organized by IIC

27-06-2022 by Leni Frau

The children's fairy tales of the unforgettable Italian writer and educator Gianni Rodari, land in Malindi where students from two of the town's elementary school will perform some of his short stories and nursery rhymes.
On Wednesday, June 29, from 9:30 a.m., in the courtyard of the Malindi Museum, an event will be staged in which Rodari will be interpreted between readings, dances, acting and drawings by children from The Learning Hub Primary School and My Me Academy
The initiative was curated by the Italian Cultural Institute in Nairobi, in collaboration with the Malindi National Museum and the Malindi Museum Society. The IIC published two years ago, on the occasion of the centenary of Rodari's birth, a collection of writings entitled "Hadithi za Rodari" (Rodari's Stories), translated into Kiswahili. This is the Piedmontese writer's first collection translated into his native African language, and some of the themes, from environmentalism to pacifism, are certainly very relevant and educationally apt for young students these days.
The event will be presented by translator Doris Kamuye, Senior Librarian NMK Webb Memorial Library and Resource Center, in the presence of Nairobi Institute of Culture director Elena Gallenca and NMK Musem curator Mohammed Haji. Admission is free and light refreshments will be provided at the end of the performances.
