On 1 July 1895, the UK government proclaimed the East African colonial protectorate and declared that Mombasa would be its capital.
Its glory as the ‘gateway to East Africa’ was to last 12 years – just long enough to build the ‘Lunatic Express’ and see it set off for what, having started out as a way-station, would go on to take its place as the main city of British Kenya.
This episode brings the podcast mini-series on the history of Mombasa to a close.
