Reorganization of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: what changes in Kenya

Between consular services and assistance to companies and exports

01-09-2025 by redazione

The Italian government has launched the most important reform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ever, with changes not only in “philosophy,” but also with the creation of new departments and substantial changes to be closer and more involved in the lives of compatriots living abroad and Italian companies that want to invest or are already established in foreign territories.
For example, consular network services will be enhanced, with automatic links to the ‘travel safely’ and ‘where we are in the world’ portals, to ensure greater usability for Italians traveling around the world.

With this in mind, even for those of us who look at services, rights, but also duties, or at least the good practices of Italians in Kenya, we believe it will be increasingly important for those who live here permanently to register with AIRE, so as not to be considered ‘second-class Italian citizens abroad’. Furthermore, it will be essential for tourists to report their presence in Kenya, download the apps, and be able to communicate with their country in real time for any issues.

“We will have a General Directorate,” announced Minister Antonio Tajani, “for services to citizens abroad and migration policies, to strengthen the efficiency and effectiveness of services for Italians around the world.”
In presenting the new changes, Tajani spoke of Italian schools abroad, cyber security, and attention to exports and the spread of Made in Italy around the world.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also been responsible for international trade, and given that international trade accounts for more than 30% of our Gross Domestic Product, and given that there is a government strategy to boost our exports around the world, to reach €700 billion by 2027, it was necessary to reorganize the Farnesina, also in light of the fact that diplomatic representations will be increasingly oriented towards supporting Italian companies, so as not to leave any Italian company alone around the world.
As for the Export Unit, whose goal is to reach €700 billion, in 2025 there have already been 6,000 requests for assistance from businesses, and 50 promotional and international economic partnership events have been organized.
There will also be a Directorate-General for Growth, which is another new development. This will be a point of reference for all businesses, as it will be divided into various sectors, including sport.

The Minister continued by saying that there are also plans for a Directorate-General that will deal with security and artificial intelligence, which will be divided into a political and a technological section. As far as cyber security is concerned, we will deal with Italian institutions and embassies to ensure the security of sensitive information held by our Ministry. The Minister also announced the creation of an internal administrative simplification unit within the Ministry to reduce bureaucracy and make services to citizens more efficient.
The Minister then presented data on the activities carried out by the Farnesina Operations Room in the summer of 2025.  A total of 12,393 contacts were handled, there were 2.6 million visits to the “Viaggiare Sicuri” website, 160,000 downloads of the “Viaggiare Sicuri” app, and 440,000 registrations to “Dove siamo nel mondo” (Where we are in the world)..  Tajani then presented data from the Customs Task Force, which held meetings with 59 trade associations, 25 companies, and 9 Italian institutions, and provided 107 responses and assistance interventions.

“To increase the number of diplomats,” the Minister concluded, "we have decided to open the diplomatic competition to all university faculties, because today you can only become a diplomat if you have a degree in law, political science, or economics and business. We are also working to ensure that there are more specializations within the diplomatic career. There will be a basic exam that will apply to everyone, and then there will be specialized exams. We want to improve quality, because the more graduates who can participate in the competition, the more likely we are to have qualified people."  “We,” added Tajani, “are not only looking at the diplomatic career, but also at the non-diplomatic one. In 2025, we hired almost 1,000 officials and assistants with IT skills in the commercial field, and we will soon be hiring more. There will be competitions for people who specialize in cyber security and international trade, but also for architects and engineers.”
