INITIATIVES

1500 masks from italian community to Malindi boda-bodas

Friends of Eden House, malindikenya.net and Pwam together

10-04-2020 by Freddie del Curatolo

Masks for all certified boda boda in and around Malindi.
The initiative, which we will document tomorrow during the distribution phase, has been organized by malindikenya.net with the supervision of PWAM and the fundamental contribution of Roberto, Ruth and Louis of the Residence B&B Eden House in Malindi.
A few weeks ago Eden House turned into a tailor's shop, with employees at work and the owners to assemble, iron and pack mountains of poly-cotton masks.
Only by distributing them intelligently and combining the delivery with awareness raising (the motto of the initiative is "I protect you, you protect me" and the fruit and vegetable market has had a good success) can one think of a concrete means of prevention. We know that tissue masks do not protect like medical and certified ones, but we are in Africa and you can't imagine having what even in more civilized and richer Western countries you can't always find. So we opted for this solution: with 50 shillings (less than half a euro) here is a mask washable in boiling water and a bit of detergent and reusable up to a thousand times.
This week's production, 1500 pieces, was designed for motor-taxis and delivered to malindikenya.net in the presence of Boda Boda Operators Vice Chairman Caroline Wanjiko.
For this donation we have to thank the friends of Eden House Stefania Barcella, Lory Farina, Umberto Caliolo and Alessandra Manfroni and the readers of malindikenya.net Francesco Bernasconi, Luigina Bernini, Rossano Zappalà and Detlef Heier.
In the meantime we are receiving other donations, not only for the masks but also for the disinfectant (we are consuming hundreds of litres of it), with an important donation from Olimpia Club, and we have already put three other tailors to work, while Eden House continues to produce masks and sell them to those who need them also for private use in Kes. 50 each. Anyone who wants to contribute can do so at Mpesa 0720178982. From Italy you can send a contribution to Maddalena Stefanelli: IBAN IT14X05034017950000004223
