Another tragic bus accident in Kenya: 21 dead

The holiday bulletin is alarming: corrective action is urgently needed

Accidents in Kenya, as well as Uganda, do not subside during the peak period for public transport in East Africa, coinciding with the vacations. At the end of the period between Christmas and Epiphany, the count is tragic, with more than 100 deaths on the roads.
The latest tragic accident occurred right on the border with Uganda: twenty-one people were killed and some 40 injured when a bus bound for the Kenyan capital Nairobi crashed shortly after crossing the border with Uganda, police told national media Sunday.
The Ugandan government plans to enact new measures to try to improve road safety after a surge in accidents in the East African country over the holiday period, but Kenya, grappling with so many priorities to turn the country's fortunes around, will also have to take a serious look at the transport issue after Minister Kipchumba Murkomen last week suspended the licenses of the "Modern Coast" company, which has been involved in a series of accidents often due to the excessive speed of vehicles driven by reckless drivers. Ugandan regional police spokesman Rogers Taitika told Agence France Press that 21 people were confirmed dead after Saturday night's accident. The victims were mostly Kenyans, but also eight Ugandans.
The bus was traveling from the eastern Ugandan town of Mbale to Nairobi and crashed in the Kenyan town of Lwakhakha, just across the border from the Ugandan town of the same name. Another 49 people were injured, Taitika said, adding that the driver apparently lost control, sending the vehicle off the road.
"Preliminary results indicate a case of speeding by the bus driver," he added.
On Jan. 6, a passenger bus had rear-ended a stationary truck near the northern city of Gulu, killing 16 people. According to Ugandan police, during the New Year's period between Dec. 30 and Jan. 1, 104 road accidents were recorded in just three days, with 35 people killed and 114 injured, in addition to the victims of the latest January accidents. Yesterday in the Kenyan town of Bungoma, another accident involving a bus left 2 people dead and about 20 injured, some of them seriously.
