Kenya is worried, and the news coming from other African countries, particularly neighbouring Tanzania, is worrying the government, which, in addition to asking its citizens not to lower their guard, is concerned about reinforcing border controls and even entering airports.
Yesterday, the percentage of positive cases in the last 24 hours rose to more than 6% with 208 newly infected out of 3415 swabs taken. The total number of cases rose to 104,201, of which 85,577 were cured.
But in the last few days, the number of people cured of the virus has been much lower than the number of new cases, and the special wards in hospitals are inevitably filling up again.
In one week, the number of patients in intensive care units has risen by a third: there are now 51, 28 of whom are on ventilation and 23 on supplementary oxygen.
Six patients have died in the last 24 hours. This brings the number of deaths since the start of the pandemic in Kenya to 1823.
The government's next decision on restrictions and the possible end of measures such as the curfew is still two weeks away, but President Kenyatta may well speak out sooner, even if the attention that has returned to high levels in recent days does not bode well for any openings or concessions. As in the rest of the world, Kenya seems set to maintain protocols and restrictions in the coming months.
