Covid-19, Kenya sends messages of hope

OMS certifies the lowest numbers in the country

15-11-2021 by redazione

The World Health Organization considers credible the data that the Kenyan Ministry of Health transmits daily regarding the Covid-19 emergency and which, over the last two weeks, have indicated an almost total absence of the virus on a national scale.
This significant signal should give pause for thought to Italian Minister Speranza, who still has a month to convince himself that it is time to reopen bilateral tourism with sub-Saharan Africa.
His Kenyan colleague Mutahi Kagwe, in recent days, has made it clear that any country that approaches Kenya with confidence and proposes a reopening of travel corridors for vaccine passport holders, removing quarantine on arrival in their country, will be welcome at the negotiating table. And not just words, since some nations, first and foremost Great Britain, have already done so.
If the problem then is the fear of arriving potentially dangerous citizens from Kenya, here that this comes to lapse, since they would enter Italy only vaccinated in possession of regular certificate. If, however, is to travel compatriots in a country defined as not yet safe, here are the numbers confirmed by the WHO speak clearly and vaccinations are increasing at a rate of 80 thousand per day. It should be noted, and it is another key fact, that those who are vaccinating are all Kenyans who live in contact with tourists and foreigners, as in the capital Nairobi and coastal vacation destinations, or in lodges in the savannah. The percentages in Kenya will always be lower than elsewhere, because those who live in the forest of Kakamega, in the desert of Wajir, in the islands of Lake Victoria or in the remote moors on the border with Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan, are unlikely to be able to vaccinate in the short term, but even more unlikely to meet a tourist in the coming months, or years.
Speranza in one of the last interviews, announcing new "covid free corridors" soon, reiterated that for Christmas he would prefer Italians to spend the vacations at home.
If the verb indicating a preference could be applied, from next December 15, also to his decree, thus granting the discretion that Germany, France and other European countries have already intelligently applied, we would all be very happy.
Meanwhile, rightly, Kenya invites not to lower the guard on the pandemic.
The government's request to its citizens does not refer so much to the current situation, but to the fact that the number of vaccinated people in the country is still small, and it is feared that a new wave could arrive and find the population unprepared, especially now that some restrictions, such as the evening and night curfew and the reopening of pubs and discos, have been removed.
Also yesterday, Minister Mutahi Kagwe announced only 21 cases of covid-19 across Kenya, with a 0.8% swab positive rate and no deaths. There are 52 inpatients currently on oxygen.
Regarding the vaccine situation, as of November13, a total of 5,990,974 vaccines have been administered in the country. Of these, 3,884,449 are first doses, while those fully vaccinated number 2,106,525.
Second dose uptake among those who received the first is around 50%. The percentage of fully vaccinated adults is up 7.7%.
The government's goal is to reach 27 million vaccinated people as soon as possible, which would provide very safe coverage, given the distribution of the population across the country.
