MOURNING
27-11-2025 by Freddie del Curatolo
A well-known Italian in Malindi and a beloved figure to many, and not only, passed away suddenly yesterday.
Angelo Lattinelli, owner of the Italian Supermarket in the Sabaki Centre, which he opened more than twenty years ago, passed away at the age of 74.
Angelo, with his ironic moustache and sly gaze, said much more than his words could express, thanks also to the professionalism he showed to those he met and who often looked down on him from above the supermarket checkout, where he was almost always present, alongside his partner Lidia.
Angelo arrived in Malindi in the mid-1990s and immediately devoted himself to importing Italian products, with the idea of creating an Italian supermarket.
With its move to the shopping centre on Lamu Road, next to Bar Bar, the Italian Supermarket took on its current form as a landmark for many compatriots and others in Malindi in the new millennium and in its best years, distinguishing itself for the quality of its Made in Italy products and its always lively fresh food counter. It is difficult to find a long-term resident or holidaymaker in Malindi, including the British community and many Kenyans, who has never left the Supermercato Italiano without a slice of prosciutto, a bottle of wine or extra virgin olive oil.
And above all, without Angelo's unfailing kindness, unpretentious but always ready with a smile.
Even if only with his eyes and his moustache. Malindikenya.net offers its condolences to Lidia and her son Stefano.
The new Oasis Mall supermarket in Malindi could reopen on August 8th.
