The low cost UAE company, Flydubai, has kept its promises: as we had announced a few months ago, yesterday Flydubai inaugurated flights to Mombasa from the Emirates hub, with a strategy that the Kenyan media see as leading to increased competition with the national airline Kenya Airways, which also operates on the same route.
It is also good news for tourism from Europe to the Kenyan coast, because through Emirates there will be more possibilities of arriving directly in Mombasa in just two stages and at prices no higher than they have been until now, having also to make the first disembarkation in Nairobi
Fly Dubai will fly four times a week from Mombasa's Moi International Airoport to Dubai's Terminal 3, using a Boeing 737 aircraft, but at a very affordable fare at the moment (around €220).
Mombasa International Airport Director Abel Gogo told the press that Flydubai's entry into Mombasa is a good move as it will increase competition among carriers to grab customers, resulting in lower fares for passengers. "The entry of Flydubai is good for Mombasa as a region. With this expansion, we will see increased movement of businessmen and tourists across the coast," he said.
The Arab low-cost carrier had already had its licences for years, granted by the Kenyan government in 2016, but complicit with the pandemic, it has been waiting for the resurgence of interest in Kenya and plans to partner with Emirates to codeshare the route, so as to offer passengers more connection options through Dubai's international aviation hub. With the launch of operations to Mombasa, Flydubai has increased its network in Africa to 11 destinations in 10 countries, including Addis Ababa, Alexandria, Asmara, Dar es Salaam, Djibouti, Entebbe, Hargeisa, Juba, Mogadishu and Zanzibar.
