Flamingos are returning en masse to Lake Bogoria, the small volcanic body of water that has always been a spectacular backdrop and is seasonally tinged with the pink of African migratory birds, making it one of the reserves with the largest "flamingo" population in the world.
According to Lake Bogoria Spa Resort general manager Lydia Ndetewo, the increase this year has been more than significant. "Currently, we are happy to be able to tell the world that the flamingos are back in large numbers and we have seen that they are up 95 percent over the last three years," she told the media.
Hospitality operators in the area are optimistic that tourists will increase, business will increase, and the region will recover from the past three years that have been hard hit economically. They are talking about one and a half million, which can fuel a business, with tourism and its allied industries, that before the pandemic had reached ten million dollars a year.
In the recent past, Lake Bogoria, like the entire Rift Valley lakes area, has been affected by drought and climate mutations that have altered the routes and permanence of the flamingos, depriving those who go to the lake of its main attraction. Another serious problem, which the government has been trying to solve for months, is that of security in regions where banditry is raging, although it is a phenomenon of infighting among herders and concerns cattle raiding, rather than affecting safaris and tourism.
