NATIONAL PARKS

Rhinos roam free on a bright green expanse, with a bevy of pink flamingos reflected in the water of a lake and the outline of the world's oldest ridge mountains. There is only one place on the entire planet where such a spectacle can be seen, and that is why Kenya's Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the most sought-after destinations for Africa's nature lovers.
The park was established in 1961 as a bird reserve and then designated as a national park in 1968. Nakuru National Park has a picturesque landscape that consists of a shallow salt lake of the same name. The lake occupies a significant part of the park and attracts large numbers of flamingos, among other bird species.
The park also has wooded and grassland areas, acacia forests and rocky cliffs and is renowned for its diverse wildlife. Although relatively small in size, it is home to numerous animal species, including black and white rhinos, which are the park's main attraction. Other notable wildlife species include buffalo, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, impala, hippo and various primates such as baboons. Predators such as lions, leopards and hyenas are also found in the park.
Lake Nakuru National Park also is internationally recognized as an important birding site. The alkaline waters of the lake attract vast flocks of lesser flamingos, which often number in the hundreds of thousands. Greater flamingos and other bird species such as pelicans, cormorants, herons and storks can also be seen. In total, the park is home to more than 400 species of birds, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts.
Conservation efforts: Lake Nakuru National Park has played a key role in the conservation of endangered species, particularly rhinos. It has been an important sanctuary for black and white rhinos, contributing to their protection and population growth. Efforts are also made within the park to conserve other wildlife.
Visitors can engage in a variety of activities. Photo safaris are very popular and allow tourists to explore the park and observe its diverse wildlife. Birdwatching is another activity of choice for tourists, especially along the lakeshore. There are also designated picnic areas within the park where visitors can relax and enjoy their surroundings.
Lake Nakuru National Park is easily accessible by road from Nairobi and other major Kenyan cities. The park has well-maintained roads, making it convenient for self-drive safaris or organized tours. The nearest airport is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, from which you can drive to the park in about 2 1/2 hours.
