CURIOSITY

How much does it cost in Kenya to name an elephant after yourself, a loved one or a fancy name? The answer is being staged today at Nairobi National Park: 500 thousand shillings (just over 4,000 euros) can be enough for a newborn baby elephant, and it may even be affordable, because it will be able thanks to you to call it "Pantagruele," "Ernesto," or "Forza Inter" for quite some time. An elephant, on average, lives about fifty years, if poachers or drought don't take it out first.
For an adult elephant it goes up to a million, and for the legendary "big tuskers," who even after death will remain in Kenyan history, it goes up to more than 20,000.
Who will shell out these figures? Definitely a bunch of VIPs and politicians who will attend the "Magical Kenya Tempo Naming Festival" fundraising dinner to be held at the Club House in the capital's national park.
The KWS explained that the initiative will be used to raise funds to protect animals that are currently facing food access problems due to the ongoing drought.
The effects of the drought are manifested in reduced water and forage availability, leading to tensions in human-wildlife coexistence as wild animals and humans migrate in search of water.
"The goal of the Tembo Naming Festival is to provide a safe haven for our gentle giants through the creation of safe spaces," reads part of the statement.
The idea of a festival was brought forward by the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife in 2021 in an effort to raise funds for the reserve. Last year, the ministry raised Ksh 16.5 million in an event attended by individuals and businesses.
"Queata is certainly a big milestone for Kenya and this initiative will help ensure the protection of elephants in Kenya not only for ourselves, but also for future generations," said former Tourism Minister Najib Balala, proponent of the brilliant initiative for the affluent few. Balala has officially left politics in Kenya and has been appointed vice president of an international NGO that focuses on the preservation of protected animal species. Let's hope with initiatives, however laudable, that are less elitist than this...
