Italian foreign minister Di Maio comes to Nairobi

Important meetings in terms of partnership and cooperation

12-06-2022 by Freddie del Curatolo

A visit that was in the air and had already been announced by Kenyan Ambassador Paul Ndungu at the Italian Republic Day last June 2 at the residence of his Italian colleague in Nairobi Alberto Pieri.
As confirmed on Sunday, June 12, by the Farnesina, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, will be on a mission to Ethiopia and Kenya.
"This visit," notes the Foreign Ministry website, "which follows those made in recent weeks by Minister Di Maio to Angola, the Republic of Congo and Mozambique, confirms the attention Italy reserves for the African Continent, and in particular the Horn of Africa. This mission testifies to the desire to strengthen the partnership between Italy and Africa, a Continent that is at the center of Italy's international agenda and to which a prominent role was reserved during last year's G20 Presidency through numerous initiatives.
Following his visits to Uganda, Di Maio will land in Nairobi on Monday 13, and on his agenda is a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta, as well as with Foreign Affairs colleague Raychelle Omamo.
"During the talks, the most relevant bilateral, regional and multilateral dossiers will be reviewed," the Farnesina explains. "Minister Di Maio will also travel to Konza, where he will visit the nascent 'Smart City,' in the construction of which the Italian private sector is participating in a major way, in the presence of the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Innovation and Youth Policy, Joseph Mucheru.
A lightning visit, then, to confirm the good relations between Italy and Kenya and the attention of our government to the current international situation that is putting the Horn of Africa in more difficulty than other nations in the world, due to the worsening conditions of poverty related to food and especially maize, the main livelihood of the populations not only of Kenya, but also of the tribulated Somalia, Uganda and South Sudan.
These are some of the issues that Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Luigi Di Maio will discuss with some of the top representatives of the Kenyan government.
Issues that Di Maio had already announced a few days ago in a statement picked up by news agencies.
"The world bread war is already underway and we must stop it," the minister said, "We risk political instability in Africa, the proliferation of terrorist organizations, coups: this can produce the grain crisis we are experiencing.
The security of African countries is one of the priorities of Italy as well as of Europe in the NATO bloc, and as far as Italian industry is concerned, one of the flagships of defense and control aeronautics, Leonardo, is increasingly involved in logistics and travel security not only in Kenya but recently also in Tanzania, where an important agreement was signed.
Security, but also cooperation, aid and humanitarian programs. Di Maio's agenda is busy, along the lines of the trip he made just over a month ago to India, where the groundwork was laid to nurture the strategic partership between the two countries, with economic cooperation projects, investments and opportunities for Italian businesses.
"Today we need to intensify even more our relations with African countries," the minister reiterated, "because strengthening international cooperation is essential to address the global challenges that affect the continent with particular severity and the dramatic consequences of the war in Ukraine, which are having repercussions far beyond Europe.
