Kenya now records highest ever covid-19 deaths

Worrying increase of cases in the country

20-03-2021 by redazione

The Covid-19 situation in Kenya is progressively and worryingly worsening: from the highest number of deaths in 2021 in just 24 hours, we have moved on to the extremely sad record of the highest number of deaths since the start of the pandemic: 28 yesterday alone.
To these official figures must be added those that have not been transmitted, far from the spotlight of health facilities and the procession of swabs, but which are certainly there and are increasing, judging by the increasing number of people in mortuaries and funerals.
After a year of a foiled 'ecatomy', as the World Health Organisation defined Africa's possible humanitarian emergency, and several months of living as if nothing had happened, with the only restriction respected (and not everywhere) being curfews and hardly anyone wearing masks and keeping their social distance, the hoped-for herd immunity has not yet arrived. On the other hand, the variants that have spread the contagion have arrived, and now the dedicated wards of hospitals are dangerously full, with doctors and nurses grappling with vaccines and their booster shots, in order to be able to work in peace.
Yesterday, Director of Health Mercy Mwangangi gave the results for Friday 19 March: 1,354 positive cases were found out of 7,732 swabs analysed in the last 24 hours, with a positive rate per test of 17.5%. This is very high compared to the worldwide trend, even though most of the infected are asymptomatic.
The total number of confirmed positive cases has thus risen to 118,889, while the 28 deaths have brought the number of deaths to almost 2000. That's 1982 to date.
"We are witnessing a worrying trend," said Mwangangi, "Every effort must be made to arrest the situation. The rising cases are an indication that we have let our guard down and most of us have thrown caution out the window.
Of the new cases reported, 1,301 are Kenyans while 53 are foreigners.
Nairobi as usual recorded the highest number of cases with 717, followed by Nakuru with 174.
185 patients have recovered from the disease, 136 from home isolation while 49 from various health facilities. The total number of recoveries is now 89,388.
