Kenya is gearing up with new restrictions for travellers from the rest of the world.
In addition to stricter controls on arrival, the request for the QR code for those arriving from any international airport and the request for the swab with anti-counterfeiting certificate to and from all African countries (but lately the control is extended to all, as we have already pointed out), the Kenyan government is planning to restore the 14-day quarantine regime for those coming from countries considered at risk.
In particular, the first official statement issued concerns citizens from Spain, Switzerland, Kuwait, the Czech Republic, Brunei and Thailand.
The quarantine, valid from yesterday Monday, 8 March, will be carried out in facilities, including hotels in the country at the expense of the traveller.
For the moment there are no other countries affected by this measure, but the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Covid-19 emergency task force are monitoring the situation in each individual country and it is not certain that other countries could be added in the coming days. This comes at a time when President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to decide this week on the possible relaxation of national restrictions.
The attention of the population and the tourist, restaurant and nightlife and transport sectors is focused on the possible end of the curfew, which has now been in force for 11 months. However, reports of an increase in the number of infections and the now confirmed presence of cases of the 'English variant' do not give cause for optimism, even if in recent days some political rallies of the country's great leaders have caused a stir, with hundreds of people attending without the slightest respect for Covid-19 protocols: people crowded together and very few wearing masks. On the other hand, the rules applied in hotels and restaurants remain strict, with distances between tables, a quota of customers and the end of service strictly at 9 p.m.
In Kenya, as in the rest of the world, the situation is constantly evolving and there may be new developments every day. Hopefully always positive, and not a virus.
