Kenyan safari agencies are reporting a boom in bookings such as they have not seen in years, and there is hope that the rains that have fallen in recent weeks will improve the situation, which in certain parks, especially the Tsavo East and West, is still not fully restored after so much drought, where the grass is not so green next door, herbivores are seeing an end to forced fasting and predators a little more flab around the bones of the unfortunate ones who arrive for dinner.
Yet fortunately, the lure of the wilderness and its inhabitants in the wild is one of the biggest draws we see when it comes to tourism in Sub-Saharan Africa and particularly Kenya, which again this year won all the major awards as the world's best safari destination.
In first place, as always, in the choices of tourists is the Masai Mara, where although the great migration is now over, a spectacle that more or less lasts from June to September, the attractions are many, starting from the groups (pride) of lions and the hunting scenes of felines, to the lunar landscapes that are home to thousands of herbivores and more or less all the specimens present on the continent.
Also held in high regard, in the desires of enthusiasts, is Samburu where, however, like Turkana, the situation is even more dramatic due to the continuing drought that has not only dried up the conservancies but also soured tempers and made the areas north of Mount Kenya less safe than before.
However, certain "conservancies" are still havens of relaxation and constitute safe as well as exclusive landings. Clearly, safari prices rise, although once in a lifetime if you can spare no expense, it is worth it. For the Italians, as was the case in pre-pandemic, the national park of reference is Tsavo East, where the situation these days has slightly improved after the rains and the river swelling of those in the north, finally giving great relief to all animals and particularly to elephants, of which Tsavo is full, being the one most inhabited by large tuskers. In recent months we had reported to you how hundreds have died of starvation and others have also ventured outside the parks to inhabited villages in search of water and vegetation to eat, dramatically fueling the problem of human-animal conflict that in Amboseli has seen the death of 11 lions. The very "safari lounge," as the latter is called, on the border with Tanzania, confirms itself as a highly coveted
"niche" but also unmissable, despite the landscape made dry by weather conditions, especially since it has the incomparable spectacle of Kilimanjaro towering over it, as well as giraffes, zebras, elephants, flamingos and amphibians.
The season is upon us and those who have booked a vacation will most likely visit the "animal kingdom," while those who have not thought of it in time are likely to be left stranded. Africa's great natural attraction returns to excitement!
