Kenyans flow from cities fearing a new lockdown

More patients in ICU, medics postpone strike

07-12-2020 by redazione

While hundreds of citizens are anticipating possible government decisions about a pre-Christmas lockdown and moving to their native villages, there is an increase in admissions to intensive care in the country's hospitals and also positive home care for their mild symptoms which have been confirmed by the swab as caused by Covid-19. In the meantime, the percentage of cases compared to swabs finally fell below 10%, and yesterday Sunday, Sunday 6 December, it was 8.6%.
This is the official photograph of Kenya during the last weekend. With 1031 cases in 48 hours but no more than 10 thousand tampons, the situation is improving slightly and the Government fears that travel over the Christmas period could frustrate the progressive decline in infection.
On the other hand, however, many patients are seeing their condition worsen and in two days the number of admissions to intensive care units has increased by 20%. The number of deaths in 48 hours was 20, and the figure rises to 1526, while that of the cured, with another 397 reported, rises to 68,929.
This figure coincides with the protests of part of the health workers' unions that have not given up the possibility of calling a national strike, after a meeting last week seemed to have returned the truce with the Ministry of Health, but in the meantime they have postponed it.
The Board of Governors is clamouring for the lockdown of the counties, at least those most at risk, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Kilifi. This possibility will also be discussed today at the extraordinary meeting of the Emergency Task Force.
On the other hand, the closure of tourist areas would bring further damage to the sector already severely affected by the months of closure, restrictions and protocols.
Currently, there are 1,178 patients admitted to various healthcare facilities across the country, with 8,113 in isolation and related home care.
86 patients are in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 36 of whom are in ventilatory support and 49 in supplementary oxygen. A further 66 patients are on supplementary oxygen, 58 of whom are in general wards. 8 are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).
