Kenyans on google: love and football

Most clicked questions in 15 years of Google stats

13-08-2021 by Freddie del Curatolo

Soccer and love. This could be the subtitle of a dossier on the questions asked by Kenyans on the most famous and used search engine in the world.
Google, to celebrate 15 years of its system of analysis of searches "Google Trends", has published statistics regarding every single nation whose citizens turn to the portal to ask for information or learn more about any kind of subject.
What comes out is a "national-popular" portrait of the adult Kenyan as emotionally insecure (the most clicked question ever is "How to make love", followed by "How to kiss") and as devoted to sports betting (the most searched words ever, after the English soccer championship, the Premier League, are those of two gambling sites where you bet on the results of soccer matches).
But it is also a people that in a short time has adapted to online shopping, since the fourth "query" ever is Jumia Kenya, the national Amazon where you can buy everything from iron to television, from a pair of shoes to solar panels.
Reporting, among the top ten general searches of the last 15 years also for the national power company, Kenya Power & Lightning. Probably to be placed in the "curses" category....
The most clicked political figures definitely reflect the top positions and the popularity of the citizens who turn into voters every five years: the current President Uhuru Kenyatta soars in the first position, while the leader of the former opposition Raila Odinga is second at a stone's throw and the Vice-President now rising outsider William Ruto climbs the podium and deserves the bronze.
In fourth place instead the talked about "dissident" Miguna Miguna, a sort of revolutionary-imboner, halfway between a Che Guevara and a Kenyan Beppe Grillo who was kindly invited to exile during the previous elections and has tried several times in vain to return to his homeland, even if only as a tourist since he also has a Canadian passport.
Among the non-political personalities and the first woman ever, the television presenter Betty Kiallo, whose private life is as curious as and more than the public one, and the late former CEO of Safaricom, a true grey eminence of the Kenyan economy, who has thrilled his compatriots with his long battle, eventually lost, against cancer.
Returning to the most typed questions on the search engine, after the "know how" of the amateur (with even a more platonic "What is love?" or "What is love", whose answer refers sadly to the famous catchphrase from Haddaway's disco ... "baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me no more"), appear "How to write a Curriculum Vitae" and "How to make money online", but also how to apply for loans with Mpesa and how to cook rice pilau.
Having said that in the "sport" category the Serie A soccer team climbs the ranks up to number 9 (the media power of Cristiano Ronaldo, one supposes) and that the most searched song lyrics are those of Despacito (stuff for the discerning palate...), in Kenya there is also a lot of faith, including gospel songs and preachers but that in the end the most requested women in the image are the super sexy dolls Kim Kardashian and Nicky Minai.
No mention of the coronavirus, which for example in our country in just two years has entered the top ten. Not only in this, Kenyans are perhaps more naive and superficial than us Italians, but certainly less "fearful", since before asking how to make good love, they ask google about how to discover the betrayal of the partner ...
