FREDDIE'S CORNER

I sleep above the bridges because...

A shot, a Kenyan story

13-02-2024 by Freddie del Curatolo

I sleep above the bridges, because there is no more room below.
Because there is no longer any need for me to hide.
No one is ashamed of my shame any more
People don't ask so many questions anymore
I'm not Googling and I don't have teeth for selfies
and then, look at the view from here.
I sleep over bridges because I am able to feel alone
and not to feel the world confused down there
I am there and I am not there, lying and hanging
I am not prey and no one can chase me away
it's hard for the pot-bellied policemen to climb the stairs
and even if they go up them,
they know they couldn't ask me for anything
except to find me another bridge.
Here there are no rats nibbling at my toe
the cockroaches that rummage through my hair
there are no sewage, no landfill miasmas
the humidity doesn't penetrate wickedly into my bones
Over the bridges the city smog arrives lightly
I can appreciate the difference between the effervescent gas of motorbikes
and the black diesel combustion of public transport
the full-bodied puffs of trucks and the refined super of turbos
I sleep up here because I feel closer to the sky
that sky I dream of every night since I was destined for the underworld.
