Floods across Kenya, Nairobi dead and displaced

According to meteorologists, the rains will intensify

26-04-2024 by Freddie del Curatolo

Persistent rainfall in recent days has triggered an emergency across Kenya. Since the beginning of the week, 45 people have died in the country as a result of the floods, including 13 in the capital Nairobi alone, where the situation is also dramatic due to the abundance of watercourses and the almost non-existent drainage and channelling of water, and the number of displaced persons is estimated at 96,000. If in the coastal regions one has the impression that the worst is yet to come, in the north the situation is getting more complicated in the last few hours, so much so that the government has appointed a task force for the flood emergency. The worst scenes to be seen come from the Mathare slum, where the river of the same name has broken its banks, devastating the tin shacks in which thousands of vulnerable people are crammed, and a population that in any case does not want to leave that open-air hell, because for them perhaps the world outside the slum is even more hostile.
President William Ruto has declared that anyone considered to be in danger will be transferred elsewhere, despite his refusal. But there are many Kenyans who feel that once they are taken from their homes, however dilapidated, they will never find them again and will be forced to live as refugees in unknown lands. In the suburbs, in addition to the blocked roads, of which there are as many as 13, including some key arteries, there are reports of collapsed bridges and damaged infrastructure.
According to Kenyan meteorologists, the storm phenomena will intensify in the coming hours.
