Optimism, hope, the desire to try and believe that there is always a reward for commitment and the desire to assert one's reasons, which are not just personal or 'caste' interests, but the common good.
With these principles and this enthusiasm, we at Malindikenya.net (myself Freddie del Curatolo and my wife Maddalena 'Leni Frau') gladly represented the Italian community and its tourism sector at the installation ceremony of the new Governor of Kilifi County Gideon Mung'aro. We have already explained how Gideon has been a well-known person for at least 25 years, that is, since he was mayor of Malindi in the 1990s and manager of Lion in The Sun, Flavio Briatore and Naomi Campbell's first boutique hotel in Malindi.
Mung'aro is a seasoned politician, having held various positions in the national government, he was Minister of Mineral Resources and then Undersecretary for Lands. Now, he who comes from the hinterland of Watamu, has the opportunity to re-launch tourist destinations by putting what he has learnt to good use and doing it in his home region, where tourism is a key resource for his people and where foreign operators, especially the Italians but also the British, the Germans and the Kenyans themselves, have invested and may be inclined to continue to do so, if they see themselves happily supported by the institutions, more so than what happened in the last ten years with the previous county management.
So this is our approach and optimism in seeing, in Kilifi where we were officially invited, so many familiar faces who have always shared with us many initiatives for the good of Malindi and Watamu especially. Such as the MP elected in the Kilifi North constituency, of which Watamu itself is a part, Owen Baya. Baya was instrumental in the start of the asphalting of the coastal road that is to link Malindi and Watamu through Mayungu and which could change the tourist mapping of the entire area. Not to mention all the other pending issues, foremost among them the now mythological adjustment of the Malindi International Airport.
Here's to this day of celebration and our expectations, although they are always very low when it comes to politics, we hope to be able to say 'we were there' very soon.
